Hi folks, how are you doing? I have no doubt that you are doing good and enjoying Celebrations With Ebenezer Narh Affum.
You may like and love some celebrities or enjoy the songs of your music stars but then you may not know much about them, but with this column you are assured of all the information you need about your favorite celebrity. Not only would Celebrations with Ebenezer Narh Affum give you information but it would celebrate our celebrities and urge them on to greater heights.
Before I even go ahead to celebrate a great music star in the country, I would want to thank all those who have been giving me feedback and words of encouragement so far as this column is concerned. Your words of motivation would go a long way to make this column a success. It’s always said that, for everything there is a season. Indeed, without mincing words, in as much as Shatta Wale may have been crowned Artiste of the Year, one artiste who keeps climbing the ladder of success with ease, determination, hardwork and perfection is Sarkodie. In fact, the success story of Sarkodie is simply amazing and comparing him to his colleagues, I would not be wrong if I say he is miles ahead.
Sarkodie, also referred to as Obidi Pon Bidi is a Ghanaian hip hop artiste, performer, entertainer and brand ambassador. Considering the genesis of Hiplife spearheaded by Reggie Rockstone, Sarkodie’s contribution to the music landscape has been phenomenal. His real name is Michael Owusu Addo but uses the name Sarkodie for showbiz because whilst growing up, he realized that most rich people he knew all had that name. He is the fourth of five children and born to Emma Maame Aggrey. Sarkodie was born on July 10, 1985 and was raised in Tema.
Observing Sarkodie some years back, I felt for him to be successful on the international scene, he needed to rap in English but due to his exploits with his Twi Rap so far, I am really convinced that Sarkodie would still go further with what he is currently doing .
Sarkodie often raps in his native language Twi and is considered a “multifaceted rapper” due to the various distinctive musical styles he possesses. As a musician who is very mindful of the business aspect of his music career, he has had the opportunity to be brand ambassador of some corporate institutions; Samsung Mobile, Tigo Telecommunications Ghana, Fan Milk and some others yet to come his way. He has his own clothing line, Sark Collections which is a collaborative effort with one Yasmin.
Sarkodie was ranked 8TH on Forbes and Channel O’s 2013 list of the Top 10 Richest/Bankable African Artistes. Probably, his motto ”money no be problem” has been the motivating factor in his career. He happens to be the first Ghanaian to win the BET Awards for “Best International Act Africa” and has had the opportunity and privilege of performing on the same stage with international musicians such as Ludacris, Trey Songz, T-Pain and Movado. He has collaborated with so many great artistes on the African continent which has earned him a large fan base in Africa. Without doubt, he is considered one of the most celebrated musical icons to hail from Ghana and Africa as a whole.
In as much as the issue of who originated Azonto has been in the public domain for quite some time now, Sarkodie is one artiste who has been able to popularize Azonto as a dance and some sort of a music genre. Sarkodie has three albums to his credit namely, Makye released in 2009, Rapperholic released in 2012 and Sarkology which was also released in 2014. With just three albums, his level of achievement far outweighs those who even have more than three albums.
He is tagged as the fastest rapper in Ghana but I beg to differ. He isn’t just the fastest rapper but the best rapper in Ghana and it would be a very difficult task to celebrate him without touching on the numerous nominations he has gotten as well as the awards he has bagged. About two weeks ago, he won the Best Hip Hop Artiste award at the MTV Africa Music Awards.
At the Ghana Music Awards in 2010, Sarkodie got nominated in the Artiste of the Year, New Artiste of the Year, Hiplife/Hip Hop artiste of the Year, Best Collaboration of the Year as well as the Best Rapper of the Year categories. To give credence to the fact that he isn’t just any ordinary artiste, Sarkodie won all the five categories he was nominated in. In the same year , his ”borga” video featuring Jay Town got nominated for the Best Edited video, Best Hiplife Video as well as the Best Collaboration Video at the 2010 4SYTE TV Music Video Awards. His ”babe” video also got nominated for the Best Photography category. Sarkodie ended up winning the Best Edited Video.
In 2011, his ”lay away” video won the awards for Best Hip Hop Video and Best Edited Video and the collaboration with R2bees on ”ajeiiii” won the Best Collaboration Video at the 2011 4SYTE TV Music Video Awards. He got nominated in other categories as well.
For the year 2012, the success story kept on unfolding. His ”saa okodie no” video won him the Best Hiplife Video at the 2012 4SYTE TV Music Video Awards. . ”Saa okodie no” again got him nominated for the Most Gifted West African Video of the Year at the Channel O Music Video Awards. The same video earned him nominations for the Best Directed Video, Best Collaboration Video, Best African Act Video and the overall Best Video. For the same awards, his collaboration with Herty Borngreat on ”bebrebe” got nominated as Best Gospel Video and his ”U go Kill me ”video featuring E.L got nominated in the Best Choreography Video.
He also won an award for Achievement in Music at the National Youth Achievement Award. At the Headies, Sarkodie won the African Artiste of the Year. The year 2012 was quite an eventful and successful year for Sarkodie. He also won the Best International Act: Africa for the 2012 BET Awards and for this year’s BET Awards, he is in contention for the same award. At the 2012 MOBO Awards, he got nominated as Best African Act.
At the 2012 Ghana Music Awards, Sarkodie won the Artiste of the Year, Best Rapper of the Year as well as Most Popular Song of the Year and also got nominations in other categories. In last year’s edition of the 4SYTE TV Music Video Awards, his ”illuminati” video won him the Best Directed Video, Most Popular Video, Best Hip Hop Video as well as the Overall Best Video/Most Influential Artiste and also got some other nominations. The collaborative effort between Sarkodie, Jayso and Efya in the ”I’m In Luv with your girlfriend” video won the award for Best Storyline.
This year has also been very successful for Sarkodie and his team. Apart from winning the Best Hip Hop Artiste award at the just –ended MTV Africa Music Awards, he earlier on at the 15th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards won the awards for Hiplife/Hip Hop Artiste of the Year, Best Rapper of the Year, Album of the Year (with Sarkology) and Hip Hop Song of the Year (with Illuminati). He got other nominations but lost out to Shatta Wale for the Artiste of the Year.
Talking about nominations and awards won, Sarkodie has a long line up and with time, winning an award at the Grammys wouldn’t be an impossibility. I would have loved to talk more about his nominations and awards but lack of space would not allow me. Sarkodie has done incredibly well on the music scene and we need to be proud of him as a Ghanaian and an African. Never forget to say a word of prayer for him as he takes giant steps in his music career.
On my own behalf and on behalf of Flex Newspaper, I would like to congratulate Sarkodie for the success chalked so far. I would also want to congratulate Sarkodie’s management team for the work done so far. Celebrations with Ebenezer Narh Affum comes your way next week and definitely another personality within the arts and entertainment industry would be celebrated.
