Organisers of the celebrity vigil to protest Ghana’s power crisis say they have been given an all clear by the police to embark on the controversial procession, Saturday.
The organisers took the police around Legon, Tetteh Quarshie route where the vigil is expected to take place.
One of the lawyers for the vigil organisers Nana Kwasi Awuah, said they have “agreed with the police on how the thing will take place.”
The vigil was triggered by actress Yvonne Nelson who began a #dumsormuststop campaign on twitter.
Her campaign has received adoration and condemnation in equal measure.
The intended vigil did not only provoked dispute amongst political players but also triggered a major boundary dispute between two traditional councils in the Ga State.
The Ga Traditional Council insists it will resist the organisation of the vigil because it will violate the ban on drumming and noise-making it imposed few days ago.
The Council is convinced the Tetteh Quarshie-Legon route the organisers of the vigil have planned to use falls within the jurisdiction of the Ga Traditional Council.
Head of the Council Nii Dodoo Sackie said the organisers must either postpone the vigil or take it to another community.
He warned of chaos if the organisers went ahead with the vigil.
But the La Traditional Council is also claiming ownership of the route to be used for the vigil.
Nii Yemo Bronie in a roll-call-style fashion, mentioned Ayi Mensah, Medina,Oyarifa, Legon, 37 as areas within the La Traditional Council jurisdiction.
He said the La Traditional Council has not yet imposed a ban on drumming and noise making and charged organisers to make all the noise they can. He has vowed to be part of the vigil.
The Ga Traditional Council had petitioned the Police demanding the vigil be stopped, at least for the period of the ban.
The Police then called a meeting, Tuesday to resolve the concerns of the Ga Traditional but officials of the Council failed to turn up for the meeting.
Joy News’ Anny Osabutey who was following the meeting reported the Ga Traditional Council as saying they will be present tomorrow.
Accra Region Police PRO ASP Efia Tenge told the media that in principle they have agreed on the vigil but have some issues they have to agree on with organisers.
“Organising a vigil of this nature is procedural,” she said, adding come tomorrow a firm decision will be taken.
