Electricity Supply to Ghana’s National Theatre has been cut off, Kasapafmonline.com can say.
The facility owes the Electricity Company of Ghana some 650, 000 cedis in unpaid bills for the period beginning 2014.
While handlers at the facility are grappling with how to manage what is an embarrassing situation, Kasapafmonline.com understands very little or no effort has been made by the state to rescue the 23 year-old facility.
Government this website understands, has made its position clear on the issue, insisting the facility’s manager’s should be in a position to raise funds to pay off the accumulated debt.
The ECG we’ve been told, cut off supply to the facility on August 11. The facility has since resorted to the use of its standby generator, which also costs some 650 cedis in daily fuel costs.
Opened in 1992 and built by the Chinese government as a gift, it is governed by the National Theatre law 1991, PNDC Law 259.
With a building area of some 11,896 square metres, it has over the past two decades hosted local and international events. It remains one of Ghana’s most visited event centres. The facility has three resident companies; National Dance Company, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the National Theatre Players.
