When all thought markets on fire was a thing of the past, Daily Graphic reports that the Kumasi Central Market was on fire Wednesday dawn. The fire destroyed property worth thousands of Ghana cedis. This is not the first of its kind in the biggest market in Kumasi as it has happened on several occasions.
A fire outbreak at the Kumasi Central Market early Wednesday morning has destroyed property worth thousands of Ghana cedis.
Graphic Online’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Donald Ato Dapatem reported that the cause of the fire which started at about 1:30am was not immediately known.
According to our correspondent most of the shops affected, numbering over 100 were at where they sell groundnuts, artificial hair, perfumes and cloths.
Fire Service personnel experienced difficulties in battling the fire effectively due to lack of access to the area which was affected by the fire.
They managed to bring the inferno under control at about 6:30am.
The extent of damage was not immediately known.
Many traders upon hearing of the incident have rushed to the scene to check on their goods.
It has been a scene of sorrow , anguish and pain as scores of traders, mostly women, who had lost valuable items and goods running into thousands of Ghana cedis to the raging fire screamed, sobbed or wept uncontrollably.
There is a heavy police presence to maintain law and order as well as prevent looting which is normally associated with some of these market fires.
