The Ashanti Regional chapter of the Ghana Actors Guild has strongly condemned the calls on government to impose taxes on actors and actresses in Ghana. According to the Guild, the timing for the calls is very wrong, unfitting and unguarded.
Zionfelix.com last week published that Ghanaian Actor Nana Osei Kwame Brempong, known in showbiz as Sharpiro, has started a crusade by calling on government to impose taxes on actors and actresses in the country.
Nana Kwame, a member of the guild revealed that actors and actresses in Ghana have not been paying tax to the government of Ghana, and this does not help to develop the country.
Sharpiro, who just returned home from the United State of America granted an interview about the current state of the Ghanaian film industry on ASHH FM Entertainment Zone and stated that “it is very worrying, looking at the colossal amount of money some of the actors and actresses earn after shooting three or four movies, without paying any tax to the government or the entertainment industry. In the interview he revealed that “The producers even don’t issue any VAT receipt when they are paying us which is also wrong on their part. This can never happen in Nigeria’’
“I think if we are able to implement this suggestion, it will help us all because the money that we pay as taxes will help develop the country.”
The Vice President of the Ashanti Regional Branch of Ghana Actors Guild, , Bernard Adusei-Poku known is showbiz as Koo Musuo has described the call as unfortunate and premature.
According to him, the guild disassociates itself from the comments made by their member and will not in any move support the government to impose taxes on them.
‘’The guild and its members are very surprise about Sharpi’s comment and will not condone such pronouncement from members. The government is not supporting us, so how can the government turn around and impose taxes on us”
“The allegations that we earn a colossal amount of money after shooting three or four movies is never true ‘he stated.
Bernard Adusei-Poku however suggested that if the government of Ghana wants to impose taxes on them, the implementation must be done in forty years time where proper structures would have been put in place.
Meanwhile, information gathered indicates that Nana Osei Kwame who urged the government to impose taxes on actors has been receiving attacks from his colleagues after he made those remarks and due to that, his membership is likely to be revoked.
