Is it time to say goodbye, Castro?

$

castroIt is very sad that a serious issue such as the alleged drowning of hiplife artiste, Castro, and his female companion, Janet Bandu at Ada during a Jet Ski accident on Sunday, July 6, has in some cases been reduced to mere mockery.

Even if we refuse to see the seriousness of the issue at hand and rather choose to create trashy jokes out of it for undeserved humour and laughter, we must not forget that so far as people go to such places, water accidents will always remain a challenge to deal with.

Two weeks after the accident, perhaps, it is understandable that the intensive search for the two missing persons have been brought to an end but finding a lasting solution to such tragic accidents would go far in helping the country, especially the operators and guests of such resorts.

In other countries, a more serious and pragmatic approach would have begun to find a solution to the problem but in Ghana, no, instead, we are joking with the situation with speculations, tales, and spiritual innuendos and forthright lies. And the sad part is that, many think the twists given to the accident are funny.

Every day, a different story comes out and I wonder how many more we are to expect. I will advise that we adopt the “You and I were not there” approach and not rely on all the funny stories being churned out on a daily basis. The stories and the theories don’t even tally.

Castro’s situation had become a subject for mockery for self-styled mallams, prophets and traditional priests who are cashing in on this unfortunate story.

A lot has already been said and in all indications, a lot more would be said as Castro has not been found yet and nothing shows that he would be found dead or alive anytime soon.

Social media is the trending source of information as it has taken over traditional media such as newspapers, television and radio. The way news of Castro’s disappearance has been disseminated confirms this.

On that fateful day, Sunday, July 6, 2014, I got to know of this sad news on social media after I had received lots of calls, SMS and WhatsApp messages from friends who had wanted me to confirm the sad news they had also heard from other sources.

Initially, I treated the news as trivial until I logged onto other social media platforms, Facebook and Twitter, and was bombarded with tributes upon tributes to the alleged departed soul of Castro who had been a dear friend to a lot of music enthusiasts.

I shed a tear for Castro. I do so not only because I have followed his music career closely, but also because I have personally experienced near-drowning before and I’m aware how painful it is to lose someone close to you.

Last week, when hopes of finding the missing Castro and Janet Bandu appeared to have faded, award winning music producer, Hammer of the Last Two, posted on his Facebook wall something that attracted my attention and got me thinking.

Hammer posted these words on his page: “Forgive me but I’m pretty sure it’s time to pronounce Castro dead officially, so some of us can pay our respects accordingly. Speculations have robbed him of the appropriate courtesy paid to the departed… And failure to do this might further disrespect his memory. There’s no conspiracy or superstition to this so the denial needs to end”.

An obviously not so enthused Hammer continued: “Castro suffered a fatal accident and is not with us anymore. All these agents of dark forces should cut the crap about Maame Water and shouldn’t be encouraged with an audience at all cos Castro was a God fearing man. Let’s do what needs to be done. Just saying #RestinpeaceCastro.”

Like I said, the above words got me and several others thinking deeply about the whole situation. Shouldn’t Castro be pronounced dead, so people can offer their last respects to him and let the sleeping dog lie comfortably like Hammer is suggesting?

However, the other question that begs for an answer is whether Castro can be declared dead even when his body has not been found yet? If not, for how long are we prepared to wait?

I’m not in any way pronouncing Castro dead or advocating for him to be pronounced dead but can one live under water for two weeks and still stay alive? Or is somebody playing a prank on Ghanaians?

It Is Time Kumawood Actors Take Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others Serious – MUST READ

kumawood liwin bill mercy asieduEach one for himself, God for us all but at times you need to push some things into others throat if they seem not to know anything about its importance. For some years now, social media networks Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others have become the modern way of communicating where most people including businessmen, celebrities, government officials, event organizers and other personalities use as a means of getting new deals and advert their products. Whilst others are making good use of these platforms either by legal or illegal means, few are misusing it with or without their notice but that is not our concern, we are more interested in the lives of celebrities and what they do so let’s restrict our conversation to that arena.

Ever since these social media networks became part of us, people in the entertainment industry who are rarely seen on these popular platforms are folks from the Kumasi movie industry popularly known as Kumawood. Questions I mostly asked myself are “are they too busy to get time for it, do they lack knowledge about all these social media networks or they don’t see the essence of them?” aside these questions, there are many others I have asked myself and have heard people ask as well.

Not long ago, Akrobeto was reported to have said “What is Facebook? Is Facebook the key to life? Those who want to do Facebook are doing it and those who are not interested are also doing their own thing. It adds or takes nothing away from my career because that is not what will feed me. Most of my people are on Facebook but I don’t think I will waste my time on that thing,”

Well that is him and I can’t begrudge him for his comment but what I can say is that ‘Emmere dani aa, dani woho bi”. Time changes so you always have to get yourself updated to fit the current situation else you be left behind. Let’s take a closer look at how some Ghanaian celebrities are making good use of their social media networks, hence generating lots of income for them.

John Dumelo on April fool’s day became the first Ghanaian to gain a million likes on Facebook. John aside his motivational messages on the platform makes his fans aware of his errands. John uses that platform to advertise his movies, J.Melo products, foundation, projects and give up-to-date information about him to his fans.

Actress Yvonne Nelson has been crowned as the most controversial actress in Ghana and she gives all the glory to social media networks. Yvonne Nelson will pick her iPhone 5  and just post anything controversial about her sex life or relationship and bloggers/journalists will pick it up from there – after all bad news sells.

Yvonne Okoro, Juliet Ibrahim, Lydia Forson, Ama K Abebrese, Adjetey Annan, Nadia Buari, Jackie Appiah, Majid Michel, Eddie Nartey, Eddie Watson and other glamour actors use Facebook, twitter, instagram and other social media networks to keep their fans updated about their career. Due to these sites, celebrity’s websites are rarely seen because they can use these platforms to reach out to about million people.

I won’t even bother you with how Sarkodie, E.L Okyeame Kwame, Kwabena Kwabena, Sister Deborah, Wanlov, Reggie Rockstone, E.L and other musicians are making use of these platforms

Before Yvonne Nelson, Yvonne Okoro, Nadia Buari, Chris Attoh, Juliet Ibrahim or these glamour actors will release a movie, they would have made noise about it with the behind-the-scenes-photos on social media networks so by the time the movie is set to be released, publicity would have already been done and the only thing left is to get little commercials and stories for it.

I am tempted to think that Kumawood actors and their producers are always conversant with what they have; hence they don’t see the need to chance on other platforms to promote their brand. I remember that Cannes Festival rejected some names of Kumawood actors due to their low presence on social media networks and online – that should tell them something. Some of these Kumawood actors have larger fanbase and if they had taken these social media networks serious, they would have gone far than where they are now. Miracle Films started producing movies since Christ was a carpenter but Shirley Frimpong Manson of Sparrows Production has over 27,000 likes on facebook – I don’t know if Mr. Samuel Nyamekye, CEO of  Miracle Films is on facebook.

Agya Koo, Kwaku Manu, Akrobeto, Mercy Asidue, Rose Mensah aka Kyeiwaa and other Kumawood actors can make use of these networks to promote their brands and get deals but they are not doing that. You can hire the services of others to manage it for you if you know nothing about it – your relative can even be of help to you at this stage. Who says these hiplife musicians who are always making noise on these platforms always manage their social media networks? Some have online managers who make sure their accounts are active. They keep their online managers updated about their activities in order for them to make their fans aware through their accounts. Kumawood actors can do same.

There are disadvantages when you are on these platforms but the advantages over weigh the disadvantages if you are a celebrity. All these imposters of Kumawood celebrities come as a result the actors failing to create their accounts whilst their fans are eager to get interactive with them.

All what I’m saying is, Kumawood actors should take their online presence especially social media networks serious and it will help them. If they cannot manage it, they should hire the services of an experts – I’m ever ready to assist but not for free!

Let me end by congratulating Vivian Jill, Bill Asmoah, Emelia Brobbey, Kwadwo Nkansah Liwin, Mercy Asiedu and other Kumawood actors who are making use of these platforms in one way or the other – some of the accounts are fake though.

ghamroA Court in Accra has thrown out an appeal by the embattled ex, lead-head of the music rights protection body, GHAMRO, Carlos Sakyi.

Mr Sakyi was in court today, enewsgh.com gathers, to seek for an appeal over a July 11 ruling that asked him to step aside for two others including Okyeame Kwame, to oversee the body’s affairs until fresh elections are held.

We reported on July 11….

An Accra Human Rights Court, has ruled that the head of the music rights protection body, GHAMRO, should step aside.

The ruling, handed out some few minutes ago, would also see messrs Okyeame Kwame, Enoch Agyepong, and Aboagye DaCosta take charge of the body’s affairs for the next six months before fresh elections are held.

A major ruling that should offer some relief to the over 100 musicians who took it to court, it was lead-headed by veteran musician, Nana Kwame Ampadu, in a pool that also included composers, song writers, and music producers.

They accused the then GHAMRO boss, and his charges of ‘embezzling’ funds collected on their behalf.

Filed on Thursday, May 15, 2014, the writ maintained among other concerns that GHAMRO “have deliberately refused to organize even a single Annual General Meeting since May 2011 when they took office as interim Board Members.”

“Carlos Sakyi, Amandzeba, K.K. Kabobo and Mark Okraku Mantey,” the writ also stated “have been dissipating the funds of the organization to the disadvantage of the Rights Owners and have been paying themselves monthly salaries between GH¢2,000 and GH¢4,000, excluding other allowances, even though the regulation of the organization expressly forbids the payment of salaries.”

They made their first court appearance on June 2.

Obrafuor Diverts To Full Time Highlife

obrafourGhana’s rap legend Obrafuor aka Michael Elliot Kwabena Okyere Darko, last week told Flex newspaper in an exclusive interview at DanceStardom that he is forgoing rap for now to enter into mainstream hi-life music.

According to Obrafuor, he has done a lot of songs in rap and has realised that anytime he is featured on people’s songs, he does the singing often but he has noticed that his singing delivery makes him stands out.

“I am focusing on singing and I know people will accept me. I want to leave a mark,” he noted.

Obrafuor revealed to Flex newspaper that he currently is in the studio recording one of his latest tracks on the yet-to-be released album with Samini and would be ready very soon.

“I am an artiste that cherishes my listeners and I always have it in mind not to do anything at all for them but rather take time and give them the best. I have recorded some highlife songs but I am still not satisfied so I am still on it adding varieties to spice it up,” Obrafuor intimated.

When he was questioned about his supposed change of name that was in the news some months ago, he said, he had never done that but the truth of the matter is that, he did an album which was strictly hip hop entitled ‘Obrafoforo’ meaning ‘new life’. He said this could have been the reason why people thought he had changed his name.

Obrafuor who is also known as ‘rap sofuor’ which literary translates as ‘rap pastor’ disclosed that being the ‘rap pastor’, he tries to make his accolade manifest in his life.

“If Jesus Christ comes and takes us to his throne to enjoy everlasting life in heaven…while I live, I have to live a righteous life and win souls for Christ but I didn’t say I wanted to be a Pastor or an Apostle but rather to live the doctrines of my church for all to see,” he added.

As to being a man of God or singing gospel, Obrafuor says it’s God who will decide and that if God wants him to toe that line, it shall come to pass.

Grace Ashly

Celebrated female gospel artiste, Grace Ashly finds herself in a dire situation that has the tendency of denting her image as a lady, a gospel artiste, a brands ambassador and ultimately, a role model.

The ebullient songstress, who is a level 400 student at the Methodist University was caught cheating in the end-of-semester examination and has subsequently been suspended from the school for two semesters for her misconduct.

Findings by Razz Newspaper investigations from the school proved that; the artiste was found by the examination invigilators with a foreign material in the examination hall when she sat to write the ‘Constitution’ course paper. The action of taking foreign materials to the examination hall is prohibited per the School’s Examination Rules.

According to the well-trusted source at the University, a Disciplinary Committee was set-up to investigate the malpractice and the vivacious songstress was given the opportunity to defend her case.

The well-placed source claims that Grace was unable to exonerate herself form the offense and the Disciplinary Committee found her culpable of committing the misdemeanor and leveled the appropriate sanctions on her.

The University has therefore suspended her for two (2) semesters which means that; the artiste, who was expected to graduate this year – would have to hold on and graduate another year.

Grace Ashly was one of the many celebrity ambassadors selected to raise funds for the Black Stars in their shameful participation at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. She is presently promoting the participation of the FIFA Under-20 Women World Cup to be held in Canada.

joey b obourThe Musician Union of Ghana, (MUSIGA) is planning to join the demonstration being put together by organised labour against the economic hardship that has befallen the country in recent times.

As an affiliate of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), members of the Union will join other associations of the Congress to embark on the demonstration scheduled Thursday, 24th July, 2014.

Organised labour is demonstrating their frustration against the hikes in petroleum prices and high cost of living in the country. It is also dismayed at the rapid fall of the value of the Cedi. It maintains that, the current pricing formula for fuel punishes consumers and must be reviewed.

According to the council, the ex-pump prices of premium and LPG have been increased by 28.08% respectively. These increases are said to have far-reaching effects on prices of a wide-range of goods and services.

A petition is expected to be sent to the government through the Minister of Employment and Labour relations.

“Kumawood Needs Cinemas For its Own Premieres” – Bill Asamoah

$

kumawood liwin bill mercy asieduActor and President of the Ashanti Region branch of the Ghana Actors Guild, Bill Asamoah, has responded to the Silverbird Cinema’s rejection of movies done in the Twi language, popularly known as ‘Kumawood Movies.’

Last week in Flex newspaper, it was reported that the marketing manager of the Silverbird Cinema Cynthia Ellorm Dumfuor had explained during the Women in Film making forum at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra that the cinema do not show or premiere Kumawood movies because they are of low standard.

Bill Asamoah in an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Arts and People on Vision 90.9 FM in Koforidua said that, Kumawood movies have now improved tremendously and thought that the reason for their rejection at the Silverbird cinemas would be the fact that the Kumawood movies still use VCD’s which contain limited length of movies.

“You see, I think the reason why they don’t show our movies is that most of us still use the VCD’s. The VCD’s cannot contain long movies. This is why most of our movies are in many parts. But now that some of us are migrating onto the DVD, I am sure, it will be easy for them to show our movies,” he explained.

Bill Asamoah, when asked if he thought movie premieres would benefit the Kumawood industry, answered in the affirmative.

“Of course, they will help us because premieres give the actors the opportunity to have interaction with their fans. Also sometimes, it gives the actors that platform to know their movies. Sometimes, you finish shooting a movie and you may not see it again because the working title may change when the final product is out. So going to the premiere makes you know your movie,” he said.

He also added that: “Movie premieres help to create some awareness about the movie and whip up the interest in people to go buy them.”

Asked what Kumawood industry can do to toe the movie premiere lines he answered that all they need now are venues for the premieres.

“All the big cinema houses are in Accra. The few cinema houses I had known in Kumasi when I was young have all been turned into churches. I am just hoping that we can have such places here to also premiere our movies,” he noted.

However, most people are wondering if truly fans of Kumawood movies would make time and and use their monies to go watch movie premieres, considering the fact that a preponderance of those fans are the low and middle class whose orientation about things like movie premiers are low.

Kwaku Manu Builds School In Kumasi

Kwaku ManuKumawood actor, Kwaku Manu who has frowned upon the rejection and show of disrespect for local actors in recent times – has put the Brazil 2014 rejection behind him and gone ahead to unveil a school he’s built in Kumasi.

The actor, who named the school, ‘Kweku Manu Educational Complex’ has stated that; his main reason for putting up the school is not for profit but a move to give back to society.

According to him, the School has been opened for a month and he has made provisions of school uniforms for the needy students and as well as slash the percentage of fees to be paid.

He claimed that, if other donors come in to support needy students, he is willing to run the Institution free of charge but for now, the highly reduced school fees for students will suffice.

“Although, I am already into lot of private businesses, this is the major thing I have set up and my main aim for investing in the school is the fact that, since most of us did not attain the level of education that we wanted to, we have now realized how important school is,” he explained.

The school, which is located in Kumasi at Atwima Brogoyedu (Santasi Road), is only for primary education (P1 – P6) but the actor claims that, he has lots of plots to extend the school to the secondary level.

“The only way some of us can also help the future generation is to build projects like a school for them, so we can be proud in future for helping the nation to discover more future leaders,” he said.

“As far as I am concerned most of my pals are doing a lot for the society but, not all of them want to publicize it, so that’s why it looks as if we in Kumasi are not doing much. I can mention someone like Akrobetu and others I know. They are setting up businesses and doing things for the society, so I will please advise that the media try and do more research on that,” he advised.

Miss Ghana To Drag Organizers To Court …Ready To Seek For An Injunction On Pageant

Giuseppina Nana Akua Baafi Inna Mariam PattyThe court system in Ghana is no stranger to the Miss Ghana pageant as many beauty queens have solicited for redress over contractual disputes with various organizers over the years; and the court may welcome another disgruntled queen very soon.

Embittered Miss Ghana 2013, Guissepina Baafi is threatening to drag Exclusive Events to court over the official statement released to the public, stripping her off her crown and other privileges.

Ms. Baafi has threatened that; Inna Mariam and her Exclusive Events Company must retract the official statement as well as retract some of the comments passed by the organizers on different media platforms regarding the reasons for the decision to strip her.

She is also demanding a sit-down with the organizers where she expects that, a settlement be reached for the treatment meted out to her and the character-assassination agenda undertaken against her by the organizers.

According to Miss Baafi, if a satisfactory settlement is not agreed upon, she is ready to go to court and seek for an injunction to be placed on the search for a new queen, Ghana’s participation at the Miss World Pageant as well as future pageants under Exclusive Events.

Ms. Inna Patty, over the weekend, revealed that – the reason for stripping the winner off her crown was due to the fact that, she (Guissepina) was overwhelmed with the prospects of preparing herself for the Miss World Pageant and decided to resign.

In a related development, a video making rounds on social media proves that, the mother of Inna Patty actually assaulted Miss Baafi in a scuffle to forcibly eject her from her residence. The security man on duty during the day of the said mayhem has confirmed that, indeed, Inna’s mum did assault the beauty queen.

Grace Ashy denies suspension from Methodist University College

Grace AshlyGospel songstress, Grace Ashy has refuted reports suggesting that she has been suspended from the Methodist University College for examination malpractice.

The Razz newspaper report earlier today that the singer, who is a level 400 student at the Methodist University College, Accra was allegedly caught cheating during an end-of-semester examination and has subsequently been suspended from the school for two semesters for her misconduct.

The paper claimed that the University has suspended her for two semesters which meant that the artiste who was expected to graduate this year, would have to hold on and graduate another year.

Reacting to the story in an interview with myjoyonline.com, the ‘Gyese Woba Mu’ hit singer said the story is false and that she is still an active student of the Methodist University College.

“There was an issue of that sort, but I wasn’t involved; just that I was part of a group discussing something. My name is popular and so if really there is anything such, my name will be first mentioned meanwhile I have done nothing,” Grace Ashly lamented.

She added that “even yesterday. Tuesday, July 22, 2014; I went to register for my resit exams so I’m still a student. I don’t know who is behind this, but I believe there is somebody behind it and I don’t know their reason.”

Explaining what might have fuelled the negative reportage, the gospel musician said “I was part of a group discussing a Constitution paper and the invigilators came in but unfortunately all the students dispersed and left a booklet behind but I picked it and called one of the invigilators to come for it.”

According to her the incident happened two semesters ago before the said exams and she said she even wrote last semester’s examinations.

But Public Relations Officer of the Methodist University College, Kwesi Agyapong speaking in an interview with myjoyonline.com said “as it stands now she has not [been] sacked from the school as it has been reported in some media circles.”

He added that, “She is still a student of the Methodist University College, but I will prefer you let her confirm her suspension or whatever it is.”

Kwesi Agyapong said “it’s not true” if Grace Ashly says she wrote last semester’s examinations.

Pushed to give a yes or no answer as to if she has been suspended, the Methodist University College spokesperson hesitated and said “Yes!”.

No female artiste intimidates me – ENO

$

enoAs one of the few surviving female rap musicians in Ghana, sensational Eno does not see the plus size of her body as an obstacle that will hinder her from matching up to the other rap artistes who are not so body-endowed.

“I know it is perceived that my kind of music or rapping is for those who are not as big as I am judging from the energy a rapper needs to make an impact on stage when performing.

“But I am not an idle person, I exercise a lot and I am very health conscious. Before I go on stage, I rehearse, check my breathe control and then unlock all the energy I need to make my performance look good.” she told Showbiz on Tuesday.

“If I say I want to listen to what people are saying about my body size and wait to slim before I do music then I’m sure I would be dead by the time I come out with my first single. I do not need the permission of anybody to do what I have been blessed to do and who says rap music is for only those who are slim?

Eventhough most of the ladies in Ghana who are pursuing secolar music are slim and cute, Eno does not see that as a challenge looking at the size of her body.

“I do not have a problem with the fact that most of the ladies I find myself doing secular music with are slim and I say this because, I have reached a point in my life where I tell myself that the size of my body should not determine what I do”.

Responding to whether other female artistes do not intimidate her when she is on the same bill with them, she said; “not at all, whenever I have to perform, what matters to me is how to entertain my fans and that is what I work at and I make sure I make my fans happy after every performance.”

castroThe situation with hiplife artiste, Castro and Janet Bandu, has caused many people to express varied opinions on the status of the artiste and his acquaintance –with some already declaring him dead and others thinking a publicity stunt is at play.

One of the important figures in Castro’s life, Mrs. Dorothy Tagoe has also expressed her opinion on the status of her husband as to whether he’s dead, alive or missing.

Mr. Nicholas Adu-Gyamfi, an Uncle to Mrs. Tagoe has disclosed to Razz Newspaper that; Dorothy and the rest of the family have the strongest belief that the artiste is still alive.

“Castro’s wife and her family believe that Castro is not dead. He’s missing and we are all searching for him. We believe strongly that we will see him,” he said.

“We in Ghana who represent Mrs. Dorothy have been to Ada and we think the media can help us without concentrating on her,” he commented on the media’s attention being drawn to her.

Commenting on why Mrs. Dorothy Tagoe has not turned up in the country after Razz Newspaper’s publication last week that, she was supposed to be in Ghana; Mr. Adu-Gyamfi responded – “We know the media want news but you should also consider the situation at hand and the woman involved. It’s not easy and so if she doesn’t want to speak to the media now, we will have to respect that. When she’s ready to speak to the media, will let you know.”

He also added that, the families of Castro and Dorothy have been very collaborative in their search for the multiple, award-winning artiste.

According to him, there has been effective communication between the two families and the reasons for Dorothy’s absence in Ghana since the incident is well understood by Castro’s family.

On speculations about Castro and Dorothy having divorced or having challenges with their marriage before the incident, Mr. Adu-Gyamfi stated; “If not for this issue that has come up, I don’t think you will be interested in knowing the state of their marriage, but like I keep saying, they are still married! They have not broken up.”

The search is still on for Castro and Janet Bandu, who are said to have gone missing during a weekend rendezvous on 6th July, 2014 at Ada.

Masturbation ruins sex!

couple sexNo one talks about it, so there are a lot of misconceptions out there.

Do you have secret concerns about masturbation? Do you enjoy solo sex but feel a bit guilty about it, or worry that it will ruin your sex life?

Ever wonder if the way you are masturbating is doing you more harm than good? If so, you are not alone! Masturbation remains a taboo topic of conversation so many of us silently worry about this most personal sexual experience.

As professional sex experts, we get hundreds of emails every week from men and women all around the world. They confide in us their deepest, most intimate secrets and ask for advice about their most private concerns.

We are happy to be their trusted source of information, resources and advice.

Here are the most common questions about masturbation myths — and the truth behind the myths that will set you free to explore the realm of solo sex!

Masturbation Myth #1: Too Much Masturbation Ruins Sex

One of the most persistent masturbation myths is that if you are having great sex, you don’t need to masturbate. Or, if you masturbate too much, you won’t be able to have great sex. Nothing could be further from the truth. A great sex life can include both fabulous masturbation experiences and blissful bedroom journeys with your lover.

For women, masturbation is a crucial step to learn about their body, their sexual response cycle and how they best reach orgasm. Women can then bring this self-knowledge into partnered sex and are way more likely to experience orgasm with their lover. Men can learn how to prolong erection and control their ejaculation, leading to way more pleasurable sex and less anxiety during lovemaking.

For both men and women, masturbation is the ideal way to explore the vast terrain of sexual fantasies and to explore what turns them on and what they might like to explore with their lover. Masturbation is a cornerstone of a happy sex life, and poses no threat to the quality of sex you can have with a partner. The more you have orgasms, the easier orgasms are to have! So don’t hold back, whether or not you are in a relationship, you should shamelessly enjoy the pleasures of solo sex!

Masturbation Myth #2: Masturbation Causes Erectile Dysfunction

Some men worry that masturbation is the cause of their erectile dysfunction. They report that erections come easily while masturbating but are much less reliable, or even absent, during partner sex. This is an increasingly common concern, and a very real experience. But masturbation isn’t to blame— porn is the culprit!

The truth is, masturbation can be a great way for men to learn how to last longer in bed and master ejaculation control. We offer a step-by-step guide for men who want to use masturbation to learn how to stay harder longer. But masturbating with pornography every time can cause what scientists are now calling “porn induced erectile dysfunction” which is effecting even very young men who have become dependent on porn for arousal. Check out the brilliant TEDx talk “The Great Porn Experiment” for more on this harrowing trend and how to reverse it!

Masturbation Myth #3: Masturbation Is A Form Of Cheating

If you are in a relationship, is it still ok to masturbate? We get this question several times a week over at PleasureMechanics.com, so it is clear that many people are concerned that masturbation is a form of cheating. We believe that you are an independent sexual being, as is your lover. Your relationship is where you meet in the middle. Masturbation is a positive way to strengthen your own sexuality so you have more to give to your relationship.

You have your libido, and your partner has theirs. It is too much to ask that you will both spontaneously be “in the mood” at the exact same time, every time. So if you find yourself aroused, there is nothing wrong with masturbating as a form of sexual release. If you can’t sleep in the middle of the night, masturbation can be a great way to relax and get your much-needed rest. If you find yourself jealous of your lover’s masturbation, you may have other issues you need to address.

Do you ache for more of their sexual attention? Do you feel lonely in your marriage? Do you crave moreintimacy? Try to figure out what you are longing for and ask for what you need. Masturbation has a place in a happy, fulfilling and trusting relationship.

Masturbation Myth #4: You Can Get Addicted To Your Vibrator

Many women worry that they will get addicted to the sure-fire stimulation of their vibrators. Here are the facts: you can’t get addicted to a sex toy in the same way you can be addicted to alcohol or drugs. But there is some truth to the concern. If you masturbate in the same way with the same toy every time, you can create numbness and diminish your ability to respond to other kinds of sexual stimulation.

The body adapts to repeated stimulation — so just like you ignore the sensations of your clothing after getting dressed in the morning, your nerve endings will adapt and lessen their response if they are over stimulated again and again by a vibrator. The solution? Mix it up! Use a wide range of toys on different parts of your body to create a wide range of sensations. Don’t just clamp down a vibrator and sprint to orgasm every time.

Treat yourself to a fuller experience of self-love. Create more sensations with a variety of techniques and your body will get more sensitive, instead of getting numbed out! To find out more about the dangers of depending on vibrators, check out our free podcast episode.

Masturbation Myth #5: Masturbation Starts At Puberty

Many people believe that boys and girls usually start masturbating at puberty. The truth is, masturbation starts way earlier in life! Fetal imaging has revealed that both male and female babies masturbate in utero. Anyone who has cared for a baby will report that infants and toddlers alike naturally touch their own genitals.

Many adults reveal that they started masturbating early in childhood, long before the onset of puberty. Stimulating the genitals creates oxytocin and dopamine, happy hormones that create a full body feeling of well-being. Kids use self-stimulation to calm down, and it is clear that at all ages self-touch can be a powerful way to make yourself feel good. With or without orgasm, masturbation has powerful benefits that we can all enjoy, in every phase of life.

Masturbation Myth #6: Everyone Masturbates

It should be clear by now: we believe masturbation is a healthy, positive part of human sexuality. Masturbation has profound health benefits and can contribute to a happy sex life. But that doesn’t mean that everyone masturbates. Some people simply haven’t started — either out of fear, shame or simple disinterest.

Other people take breaks for various reasons. So forget the whole “98% of people masturbate and the other 2% are liars” joke – masturbation can come and go in your life, and that is OK. The essential thing is knowing that masturbation is healthy, and that you don’t need to be embarrassed or ashamed of having solo sex. Once you embrace those ideas, you can choose when to masturbate, how often and with what additions of toys or fantasies. Your sexuality is yours alone, and nothing is more of a personal choice than how you choose to masturbate!

As a culture, we still have a long way to go towards shedding harmful masturbation myths and promoting the idea that masturbation can be a healthy and positive part of everyone’s sex life. Until then, if you have any questions or concerns about masturbation, we are here for you.
